FRIENDS OF FISH LAKE 2013 NEWSLETTER
The Friends of Fish Lake continued to make solid progress in meeting it's three stated objectives for the Fish Lake Historic area during 2013.

RESTORE, MAINTAIN AND PROTECT BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS
We were fortunate to be awarded a grant from the PNWFSA (Oldsmokeys) to reside the east wall of the open storage building, a CCC era building constructed in 1935. Friends of Fish Lake funds were used to support the residing project as well as materials to restore the foundation for the Hall House. Grant work was initiated during the June Work Week and completed by the end of July The Work Week was a huge success with 32 volunteers contributing 521 hours of work. Other work completed during the Work Week included hardware for the new door at the back of the blacksmith shop,
finishing the rock wall and drainage at the Hall House garage, rebuilding the rail fence along the road and several ground and corral maintenance projects.  Work was completed on reconstructing the interior wall and cabinets at the dispatch cabin , donated office furniture was installed.  Work in the Commissary cabin revealed significant bat and rodent residue creating a human health hazard, the structure was removed from the cabin rental program until the damage can be dealt with. More work was completed during the summer, following the Work Week, including completing the residing project and continued work on restoring the Hall house foundation and drainage . In total 35 volunteers contributed 860 hours during 2013.

INTERPRET THE HISTORIC SITE
Two articles about Fish Lake, published in the Bend Bulletin, stimulated a spike in visits during the summer, the kiosk info and walking tour guide provided additional information to the visitors. Without question the unanimous response to the visits were positive, most were not aware that such a treasure existed. The need for a host during the summer is badly needed and is being pursued by the Friends and the Forest Service.

DEVELOPING A LEARNING CENTER DEVOTED TO TEACHING WILDLAND SKILLS AND THE ECOLOGY OF THE CENTRAL CASCADES
A futuring workshop was held April 30 in the Willamette NF Headquarters co-hosted by the Friends of Fish Lake and the Forest Service. The workshop was well attended by a number of interested stakeholders. They determined that potential education uses for Fish Lake fell into 4 basic themes: Equestrian uses,  Natural and cultural history and ecology, Wilderness management and survival and Trail construction and maintenance. 4 committees were formed, each headed by a FFL director, to flesh out the kinds of training sessions that might fit under each of the themes. A summary of the work of the committees was sent to all the participants in late November. The summary can be found on our web site at www.fishlakehistoricsite.org  A decision to proceed with a equestrian pack stock LNT training session during the summer of 2014 was made to test the concept. The session will be hosted by the Back Country Horsemen of Oregon. Work with several partners will continue in 2014 to determine sessions that might be tried in 2015. We will continue to pursue funding for a feasibility study that would examine the entire scope of the sessions and capital requirements identified by the theme committees
